A great special on this superb Awatere Sauvignon, from Marlborough's experts in white varieties. The Awatere Valley is a bit cooler than the rest of Marlborough so there's less overt tropical fruit. Instead a brisk and focused style offers leafy whitecurrant and elderflower as well as that mineral streak that makes it so refreshing. Classic and just so beautiful in the glass – a wine to try.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Cameron Douglas

Savoury, spicy, very fruity and varietal with aromas of sweet hay and gooseberry, passion fruit and fresh herbs. A delicious wine on the palate, spicy and fruity, golden kiwifruit, passion fruit and savoury spice. High acidity, dry finish, a core of fruit and lengthy finish. Balanced and well made. Drink now and through 2024.

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Perhaps not as concentrated as usual but with typical Awatere sweet grass, green capsicum, tomato leaf flavours together with a suggestion of passionfruit. An appealing and accessible wine 5/11/2018" Drink 2018 - 2021

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

“A typical sub-regional style, the 2018 vintage (««««½) has clearly herbaceous aromas and flavours. Crisp and full-bodied, it has excellent weight and depth, with strong, vigorous, nettley, slightly leesy flavours, a minerally streak, and a long, crisp, fully dry finish.”
