Veteran Randall Johnson has been making Zinfandel for 20 years, and with the Artezin project he looks to avoid the variety’s heavy-handed pitfalls. Mendocino County is on the coast north of San Francisco, where the sunny days and cool nights discourage Zinfandel from getting overripe and pruney. Instead it ripens slowly and evenly, retaining its brightness and spice in a medium-bodied Zin style that has almost as much in common with nearby Sonoma Pinot Noir as it does with California’s richer red styles.
What The Critics Say
93/100 and 5 Stars Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Gorgeously fruited and complex, the bouquet shows dark fruit richness together with vanillin oak, cake spice, smoked meat and dried herb nuances. It's wonderfully weighted and plush on the palate, delivering excellent fruit intensity backed by silky tannins, finishing persistent and velvety. At its best: now to 2025. NZ Distributor: Procure. April 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025
91/100 and rated "Premium" Cameron Douglas MS
"Totally classic Zin’ with aromas of five spice and dark cherry then toasty oak, char, smoke and suggestions of red and black licorice. This transitions to a note of sour red fruits and berry conserve. On the palate - tense, fruity and spicy with flavours that reflect the nose, medium+ - ish acidity, mostly integrated tannins, smooth, satin texture and a warm balanced finish. Best drinking from today and through 2022+."
18.5/20 Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, Candice Chow
"Deep, even, medium ruby-red, youthful. The nose is elegant, nuances of blueberries, boysenberries melded with mealy notes of meat and oak spices element. Medium-full bodied, flavours of cherry cola, raspberries are bright on the palate, along with blueberries, boysenberries, unfolding cinnamon, cloves spices, lingers to a sustained finish. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich structured by fine-grained tannin extraction; bright acidity provides balance and lift, flows with spices to a lengthy finish. This is a well-balanced Zinfandel with flavours of cherry cola, raspberries, baking spices on a grippy fine tannin structure. Match with grilled meat and meat pies over the next 3-5 years. 86% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Carignan. Fermented to 14.8% alc. 100% barrel-aged, 1-2-year-old French oak barrels. Aug 2020 RRP $35 " Drink 2020 - 2025
