Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
91+/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson
"Svelte. Supple. Stewed plum and redcurrant, peppercorn and game flavours. It’s tight and dry/ing on the finish but fruit flavour continues to muscle on through. Will be interesting to see how this matures. Margaret River shiraz. It sees 34% new oak though the origin of the oak is undisclosed." Drink 2021 - 2031
91/100 Halliday's Wine Companion
"True to form with redcurrant, peppercorn, black cherry and smoky oak flavours pouring in medium-weight fashion through the palate. There's a whisper of florals too. The query is on the finish, which is tight and gamey."
90/100 Huon Hooke
"Youthful red/purple colour and a fresh, raspberry, mulberry, fruit-driven aroma. It's very regional. The Margaret River character is easy to read as cabernet. The palate is medium to full-bodied, taut and sinewy. It even has a cabernet palate profile. I could swear there was cab in it. A very good wine regardless, fruit doing most of the talking. 25 MAY 2019." 2019 - 2031
