A deeply impressive Chardonnay from Tony Bish (also of Sacred Hill), made in very small quantities. Tony has a special love of the Mendoza Chardonnay clone, which is showcased here in full-textured, full-flavoured glory. This old vine, dry-grown fruit from Hawkes Bay's Skeetfield Vineyard is gently handled, so that a year in oak (60% new) only lavishes more onto the wine's already rich sense of depth and presence. Mouth-filling, opulent and powerful, this is New Zealand Chardonnay just showing off -- big time. But for an even better effect, just try and age it a few years!

Its Origins

From the man at the helm of the Sacred Hill Wines. Tony has now started his own label and he will be producing only Chardonnay. The Chardonnay-only project is run with his wife Karryn and photographer friend Richard Brimer. The wine is clearly aimed at the 'old school' style of Chardonnay, exemplified best by his top Skeetfield label. But Tony's expertise allows the wines to remain elegant and refined, even while they are while big, bold and buttery. Experimentation in style and technique is meanwhile producing results in new styles such as his remakable, un-oaked Golden Egg Chardonnay.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"This magnificent chardonnay made from dry-grown Mendoza vines shows engaging aromas of nectarine, rockmelon, lemon peel, nougat and oatmeal characters with nuances of roasted hazelnut and vanilla. The palate is concentrated and impressively weighted, superbly enhanced by outstanding fruit purity and stylish complexity, leading to a splendidly long creamy finish. Wonderfully structured by bright acidity, this is destined to evolve gracefully. $60.00. www.tonybishwines.co.nz. Sept 2018." Drink 2020 - 2027

19-/20 Raymond Chan

"Initially restrained with softly concentrated and subtly layered aromas of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit harmoniously melded with nutty oak and mealy detail, unfolding suggestions of minerals and smoke. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a rich and concentrated core of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit entwined with some creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak. This has plenty of detail with mealy and toasty nuances. The flavours grow in richness to fill the mouth, but this is balanced by refreshing lacy acidity. There is underlying drive and power that carries the wine with positive linearity to a rich and concentrated, sustained finish. Match with roasted and grilled seafood poultry and pork over the next 4+ years. Mendoza clone fruit from the ‘Skeetfield’ vineyard, fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 60% new Taransaud oak barriques. 19.0-/20 Sep 2018 RRP $59.95." Drink 2018 - 2023

96/100 Bob Campbell (2016 vintage)

"Rich, mouth-filling chardonnay with peach and tree fruit, and a strong nutty yeast lees and spicy oak influence. Weighty, textural wine in a pleasing flavoursome style. The taste and texture of this wine endorses the old vine, dry farmed, Mendoza chardonnay statement on the back label."
