Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough’s founding vineyards established over 20 years ago. In keeping with the pioneering spirit surrounding the vineyard, a number of Te Kairanga wines have hailed from Martinborough’s history and that of its inhabitants dating back to 1879. The John Martin Reserve Pinot Noir, known and loved by many, is notably named after the founding father of Martinborough – John Martin himself. Likewise the Pinot Runholder is aptly named as a tribute to the runholders of the land back in time.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Decanter

"Last year our Best in Show Kiwi Pinot Noir came from Bannockburn in Central Otago; this year the laurels go to the North Island, with this stylish and deftly crafted example from Martinborough. It's a powerfully aromatic wine, with lots of ripe raspberry and mulberry scents lifting from the glass, ballasted by something a little sappier and firmer, almost tarry. On the palate, those raspberry fruits prove deep, long and sustained, rippling with energy from the wine's ripe acidity. The tannins are light, fine and soft: a graceful counterpart to the fruit. Drink 2019-2024."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

"This often impressive red is based on the 'best vineyard parcels'. The 2016 vintage (5*) was matured for a year in French oak casks. Bright ruby, it is fragrant and mouthfilling, with well-ripened, complex cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing excellent density, supple tannins and lovely harmony. Still youthful, it should be at its best 2020+."

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Scented pinot with an aroma suggesting cherry and red rose that continues onto the palate, which also reveals spice, anise and classy oak characters. A linear wine with impressive purity and subtle power. Good now but better in a few years 21 JUL 2018."
