Its Origins

"The ‘Kuru Kuru’, ‘Joss Bay’ and ‘Tarras Vineyards’ brands are the Marlborough and Central Otago offerings of Hayden Johnston, who following a financial and accounting background established an organic vineyard in the Bendigo region in 2002. Having planted his vineyard, Hayden set up a wine distribution business in Dublin and London to understand the dynamics of the wine industry fully before returning to his Central Otago home to continue his winegrowing. The three brands are inter-related with their background, the ‘Kuru Kuru referring to Hayden’s Maori ancestor who was married to Captain James Joss, his fourth great grandfather, after which a bay on Stewart Island is named. Hayden’s home vineyard is called ‘The Canyon’, which is near by the town of Tarras. With 3.3 ha planted, the first harvest from it was in 2006. Clones 115, 667and 5 are planted in a particularly sheltered valley. 777 is planted in 2 higher blocks. There are plans to expand the plantings. ‘The Canyon’ single vineyard wine is made only in exceptional years. Hayden works with Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners, where his Central Otago Wines are made." Raymond Chan
