Domaine Tardieu-Laurent was established in 1994. It is a partnership between Dominique Laurent, a former pattisier (and with the girth to go with it) and one of the hottest names in Burgundy, and Michel Tardieu, a dynamic young winemaker. Tardieu-Laurent is an extremely unusual operation in that they are a négociant only, buying young wines from growers all over the Rhône, which they mature and blend before bottling. They own no vineyards and don't buy grapes, only wine. Tardieu-Laurent is very much an "artisan" producer, making between half a dozen and 20 or so barrels of each wine. The majority of the wines are from the southern Rhône although superb cuvees of Cote Rôtie and Hermitage are also produced. The wines are all aged in small oak casks (often 100% new) and bottled with no fining nor filtration. Michel Tardieu proclaims himself as a confirmed terroirist, insisting that his aim with each appellation is to express powerfully the fruit and sense of place, never masking these factors with wood.
What The Critics Say
92-93/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
"Vivid purple. Displays powerful aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, baking spices and incense, with a smoky nuance that builds as the wine gets air. Fleshy and broad on the palate but lively as well, offering intense blackberry, boysenberry flavors and a suave touch of candied flowers. Finishes seamless, juicy and impressively long, with an echo of violet and discreet tannins that add shape and subtle grip. (50% whole clusters)."
92/100 Decanter, Matt Walls
"A blend of exceptional St-Joseph terroirs: La Madonne in Chavanay, Coteaux Vitrine in St-Pierre de Boeuf, Ste-Epine in St-Jean de Muzols, and Les Oliviers and Paradis in Mauves. Half of the fruit is destemmed, then it sees 12 months in barrel followed by eight months in foudre. It's a savoury, herbal style with notes of Kalamata olive, bay, marjoram and rosemary. Full, fruity and fairly soft on the palate, it has relatively low acidity but enough to keep things refreshing and brisk. The massy tannins lack a little focus perhaps, but this is a complex, juicy, very Provençal expression of St-Joseph." Drink 2019 - 2022
16.5/20 Jancis Robinson
"Purplish crimson. Aromatic, mid intensity, sweet and salty wine without that much tannin. Quite accessible and not one of the most ambitious St-Josephs (not trying to be Hermitage). Very ‘pleasant’ for medium-term drinking. 100% Syrah. Fruit from: La Madonne sur Chavanay, Coteaux Vitrine sur Saint-Pierre de Bœuf, Sainte-Epine sur Saint-Jean de Muzols, Les Oliviers and Paradis sur Mauves. 12 months in new- and one-year-old oak plus eight months in foudres (Tronçais and Allier)."
