The first winery to be established in the Gimblett Gravels Wine growing District, Stonecroft is a small boutique winery owned by Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin, who bought the property in 2010 and live on the Roy’s Hill Vineyard with their two children. Stonecroft is well known for its Syrah, Zinfandel, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines, and has the claim for the oldest Syrah vines in the country! Only organic practices are used and both the two original vineyards and the winery are fully certified organic with AsureQuality. The third vineyard is in conversion to organic status. Total production is small, with only 2,000 to 2,500 cases produced annually.
What The Critics Say
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
"Certified organic, the strongly varietal 2017 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown in the Roy's Hill Vineyard, tank-fermented and lees-aged for four months. Light yellow/green, it is perfumed and weighty (14.5 per cent alcohol), with concentrated, peachy, spicy flavours and a well-rounded, dryish (6 grams/litre residual sugar) finish. It's already drinking well." Drink 2018 - 2024
90/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"Fabulous bouquet of power and intensity, varietal aromas surge of ginger herbs, spices and white fleshed fruits as well as flowers and some candy notes. Dry, spicy, herbal and fresh. a hint of mint then plenty of ripe white fleshed fruit flavours. Some tropical lychee, honeysuckle and nougat flavours and medium+ acidity. Lengthy finish. Well-made."
92/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 vintage)
"Stonecroft ferments part of this wine in barrel to add extra texture to a wine that is consistently one of the region’s best examples. Barrel fermentation seems to slightly restrain fruit intensity while adding a little extra complexity, both of which are no bad thing in a variety that critics sometimes complain is too fruity and a little simple. Classy wine."
