A succulent and juicy Shiraz from cult producers in the Barossa. Spinifex are in a position to do things their own way, and in this serious artisan Shiraz they make a bright, nuanced wine that is more about harmony than heft. But the textural weight and presence is palpable and quite big in its own way, with nice minerality and umami tannins wrapped in ripe dark fruit. Another intriguing and European-inspired wine from the very special talents at Spinifex.

Its Origins

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. New Zealand husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wines are made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentation and relatively long post-ferment maceration.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current vintage

An aromatic, high toned, medium weight Barossa Shiraz. Spiced cherry, mulberry, dried cranberries, curry leaf, green peppercorn and beetroot aromas overlay warmer plum and chocolate notes on the nose. Mid weight and fresh on the palate which displays spiced red fruits, dried herb and savoury dried woody spice flavours. — Sourced from six vineyards nestled in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, the heartland of South Australia’s wine country. Hand harvested late in the season, the fruit was fermented in a selection of open top stainless steel and oak fermenters as a blend of both whole bunches (around 20%) and fully destemmed berries. Fermentations, undertaken by indigenous yeasts, took between 7 and 12 days and were macerated for between 10 and 14 days prior to pressing. Maturation was undertaken in a selection of seasoned French oak barriques, demi-muids and 2500 l vats on light lees for 20 months prior to blending and bottling.

94/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2016 vintage)

"Bright crimson-purple; a spray of red flowers, berries and spice on the bouquet sets the scene for a wine that over-delivers on its price and the vagaries of the '16 vintage. It's light to medium-bodied, with a cornucopia of red fruits, ripe, fine tannins providing length and persistence to the palate. There's no need for patience, but 5 years won't tire it."
