A delicious Australian expression of this rare southern Italian grape. Peter Schell of Spinifex is nothing if not independent-minded, and this non-standard bottling of Aglianico grown on the nearby Adelaide Hills reflects a willingness to value grapes and sources for their sheer textual and flavour potential. Offering a full display of the grape's vibrant fruits and mineral-savoury dimension, this wine has X-factor and luscious drinkability. Stocks are limited!

Its Origins

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. New Zealand husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wines are made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentation and relatively long post-ferment maceration.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage

"Fully destemmed and naturally fermented, the juice spends around two weeks on its skins and is matured in large and small format wood (and a portion of stainless steel). To capture the variety's perfume and bright fruit, it's bottled at ten months without filtration. With the exception of a little sulphur dioxide it was made without any trimmings."

95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2014 vintage)

"Normally, if I use the word confection it's a polite way of being impolite about a wine. Here the confection is a sugar-free glaze of dark cherry inside bitter chocolate. There's also the question of texture, which runs down the same track."
