A modern classic of Aussie Chard that shows you what a more moderate, elevated climate can do for their whites. This one is flinty, nutty and citric and everything we hope for in our best Kiwi examples but with an effortless mineral elegance and restraint of which, frankly, our best producers would be envious. A world legend of stylish Chardonnay and supreme value, the M3 is a benchmark wine too stylish to ignore.

Its Origins

Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Balhannah is also home to the winery where the Tasting Room is open daily. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Huon Hooke

"Straw and hay aromas, a hint of rubber and smoke, the palate elegantly-crafted and very savoury, dry and taut. The artifact dominates the fruit somewhat and it all finishes a little short. What's there is very good. 19 MAY 2019." Drink 2019 - 2024

16.5+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming

"Relatively closed compared with their Lenswood. Peachy fruit, apricot, cereal. Ripe and smoky with a dry, mealy finish and plenty of tangy fruit. Needs time for the nose to unblock. (RH)." Drink 2020 - 2027

95/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday (2016 vintage)

"So much flavour packed into this chardonnay, but never loses focus or detail. Pristine and perfectly ripe fruit, a mix of stone fruit and citrus folded into creamy lees, and ginger notes with a liberal seasoning of integrated French oak spice. A fuller-bodied palate, texture and complexity with ultra-refreshing acidity. No point waiting." Drink by 2024
