Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. In his vineyards near Colmar he practices the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard’s guiding hand produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. Organic.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Enthusiast, Anne Krebiehl MW
"Ripe but aromatic pear notes show on the nose of this wine. On the palate this pure fruit is held in a firm frame of phenolics and freshness that channel the concentration and drive of this wine with pure energy. The finish is off dry and lasting." Drink 2025 - 2040
94/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2016 vintage)
"Deep green-gold. Sexy aromas of pineapple, winter melon and yellow peach are complemented by honeyed and sweet spice notes. Complex, palate-coating pomaceous orchard fruit and honeyed flavors are lifted by tangy lemony acidity. Luscious and very precise, with impeccable sugar/acid balance (78 g/L r.s. and 6.3 g/L total acidity), this is really lifted and lively on the extremely long, juicily exuberant and pure finish."
93+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2015 vintage)
"The citrus-colored 2015 Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald offers a deep, flinty, smoky and lemony flavored bouquet of great precision, elegance and intensity. Full-bodied, round and piquant, this is a very elegant, pretty sweet yet well balanced and structured Pinot. It has very seductive fruit, fine tannins and a long, nicely bitter finish. I'd keep this wine for eight or ten years and it should still be fine in 20 years. -- They farm 17 hectares of vineyards, of which 5.5 hectares are located in Grand Crus sites. The most important one is the volcanic Rangen in Thann, one of Alsace’s most famous and surely most southern single-vineyard site. Although far away from the Domaine, in 1986 Bernard couldn’t resist acquiring some hectares in the Clos Saint-Théobald in the steep and south-facing center of the cru. Since then, the Schoffits spend four days per week in the Rangen: "The first thing you need to produce great wine is a great vineyard and perfectly cultivated soils and vines," says Bernard, who farms ten hectares of vines on the alluvial soils in the sunny plain, a small plot in the steep granite Grand Cru Sommerberg and old vines in Bergheim. In fact, the Schoffit family—including Bernard's father Robert, a cousin and an employee, spends six days a week in the vineyards—is highly respected even in Rangen for their efforts. But, as a consequence, there is nobody left to do any marketing or sales." Drink 2025 - 2040
