The creme of the creme, Sacred Hill's Riflemans is among the most concentrated and classy Chardonnays anywhere. It is never heavy but always luscious and generous, with gorgeous exotic tropicals playing through all those depths of stonefruit, butterscotch and toast. This will age sublimely but is beautiful to drink straight off the bat.

Its Origins

Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage

"The wine has a complex nose showing hazelnut and walnut, ripe citrus zest and citrus blossom with hints of lemon brioche. The palate is fabulously full and rich with a supple vein of lively acidity lending support to creamy oak tannins. Elegance and power!"

97/100 Bob Campbell

"Impressively pure and powerful chardonnay with salty, mineral, grapefruit, citrus, bran biscuit and cashew nut flavours. A very classy wine that’s complex and linear. Layered flavours are supported by tangy acidity that helps drive a lingering finish. Will age well." Drink 2016 - 2024

97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"This is exceptional. Elegant yet powerful, the wine is impeccably composed showing white nectarine, lemon peel, vanilla, cedar and brioche aromas on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate that is focused and expansive at the same time. The wine offers layers of fine texture and pristine fruit flavours, beautifully complemented by stylish oak infusion and seamlessly integrated acidity. One for the long haul, this is a spectacular chardonnay in the making. At its best: 2019 to 2026. $70.00. www.sacredhill.com. June 2017." Drink 2019 - 2026
