2017 Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

A wine Galloni calls "arguably the single greatest value in California Cabernet Sauvignon". This Cabernet is sourced from Monte Bello, the vineyard that gave us the legendary label from the 1976 'Judgement of Paris', helping to make the international reputation of Californian Bordeaux blends. Hence Galloni's word "value" -- this is second wine to an historic icon. Intense dark fruit, herbal and earthy mineral complexity make this a truly remarkable, X factor Cabernet.
$110.00 in mixed 6+ or $125.00 per bottle

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot

Its Origins

Ridge Vineyards makes wines that compete in terms of quality and desirability with Bordeaux First Growths and Grand Cru White Burgundies. Winemaker Paul Draper has crafted 43 vintages at Ridge and his practical, hands-off, “pre-industrial” approach to winemaking has resulted in an exceptional and highly sought-after range of wines. Although a vineyard was first planted near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1885, it lay abandoned until four Stanford Research Institute engineers bought it in 1959. Ridge Vineyards was formed in 1962 and Paul Draper was appointed as winemaker in 1969. After stunning the world by their triumph in the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, Ridge Vineyards shot to fame and gained cult status almost overnight. Since then, Ridge has concentrated on producing fine Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays from Monte Bello's exalted terroir as well as renowned Zinfandels from the Lytton Springs and Geyserville vineyards in Sonoma County.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate showed beautifully, with gorgeous notes of cassis, crushed violets, graphite, and lead pencil all emerging from the glass. Showing plenty of richness and depth, medium to full body, good acidity, and plenty of firm tannins, it’s not a blockbuster, but it has the balance and class to evolve for 15 years or more. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot.”

94/100 Anthony Dias Blue

Too often overshadowed by its celebrated running mate [Monte Bello], this exquisite wine sourced from the Monte Bello vineyard, is silky and lush with lovely structure, tangy style and complexity; sock it away for a few years and be blown away” (April 2020)
