2017 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie La Landonne

97 Points Parker's Wine Advocate
In stock
A premium Syrah from one of the world's finest producers and most sought-after vineyards. La Landonne is on the darker, iron-rich soils of the Cote Brune. This wine offers the site's deep-toned fruits and savoury and mineral power, but -- thanks to Rostaing's preference for generous ripeness, not over-ripeness -- it retains a poise that is both beautiful and classical. This will only improve for two decades or so. Allocations are very limited, so collect now!

Its Origins

Legal academic, property dealer and vigneron, René Rostaing crafts some of the finest Côte Rôties on the market today. He has owned 2 hectares in the Côte Blonde and La Landone since the 1970s but fortune has blessed him through his inheritance of four hectares of superbly sited vineyards from his father in law Albert Dervieux and another 1.4 hectares of particularly old vines from his uncle Marius Gentaz. He now has 7.4 hectares which in Côte Rôtie terms is a significant holding. Rostaing is firmly in the modernist camp of Côte Rôtie producers, destemming the majority of his fruit and being one of the first producers to ferment using vinomatics (horizontal automatic vinifiers). However he dislikes the overt taste of new oak and uses a maximum of 15% in the maturation process. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.

What The Critics Say

95-97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"In tank and awaiting bottling when I tasted it, the 2017 Cote Rotie la Landonne has smoothed out and added complexity in the past year. It now shows classic savory, meaty, la Landonne character and plenty of mocha goodness. It's medium to full-bodied, lush and velvety on the mid-palate, then finishes long and tannic." Drink 2021 - 2040

96/100 Decanter, Matt Walls

"The winemaking at Domaine Rostaing is now in the hands of René's son Pierre, and it follows the same format for all the Côte-Rôties: four weeks in tank, 18 months in mostly old oak, natural yeast fermentation, and as many stems as possible - 100% in this case. This wine shows supreme freshness and vitality, and is very direct and straight, with notes of violets, black pepper and blackcurrant leading onto a long finish. It's a powerful wine but shows great energy and presence. The acidity is pretty biting, and the tannins are tough, dense, saline and directional. This 2017 is lous, powerful, almost fierce." Drink 2028 - 2041

93-95/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Dark purple. Mineral- and spice-accented blackberry, cherry compote and violet on the deeply perfumed nose. Shows superb depth as well as energy on the palate, offering sweet blackcurrant, cherry and candied violet flavors that are complemented by smoky bacon and cracked pepper nuances. Closes smoky, broad and very long, displaying repeating mineral, floral qualities and youthful tannic grip."
