Legal academic, property dealer and vigneron, René Rostaing crafts some of the finest Côte Rôties on the market today. He has owned 2 hectares in the Côte Blonde and La Landone since the 1970s but fortune has blessed him through his inheritance of four hectares of superbly sited vineyards from his father in law Albert Dervieux and another 1.4 hectares of particularly old vines from his uncle Marius Gentaz. He now has 7.4 hectares which in Côte Rôtie terms is a significant holding. Rostaing is firmly in the modernist camp of Côte Rôtie producers, destemming the majority of his fruit and being one of the first producers to ferment using vinomatics (horizontal automatic vinifiers). However he dislikes the overt taste of new oak and uses a maximum of 15% in the maturation process. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.
What The Critics Say
92-93/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
"Brilliant violet color. An expansive bouquet evokes ripe black/blue fruits, potpourri and olive paste. A lively mineral nuance builds in the glass. Shows impressive depth and energy on the palate, offering sappy dark berry, spicecake and violet flavors that are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows an appealingly light touch for its heft and finishes on a subtly tannic note, displaying sharp delineation and mineral thrust."
92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski
"Hints of peppery spice and licorice add complexity to the blueberry and cassis-scented nose of the 2017 Cote Rotie Ampodium. It's medium to full-bodied, with silky but firm tannins and a long, dusty finish. It should be approachable in a couple of years but drink gracefully for a decade and a half." Drink 2021 - 2035
17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming
"Open, meaty nose with a lovely herby note. Smoked sausage character. Succulent and peppery on the palate, and only just hinting at the further complexity which lies in store. (RH)." Drink 2024 - 2037
