"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage
"A single-variety Fiano from limechalksoils which contribute to the enhancement of the aromatic markers of Mediterranean macchia owned by this vine. Thus, between broom flowers and thyme, the delicate aromas of chamomile, hay and mango and pomelo can also be savoured. A mineral palate with vibrantly savoury traces which quiver and quench. Then the rhythm changes to become slower and more harmonious, an invitation to sip this outstanding white wine with the correct quietude enjoying its every change of tone. The finish presents a silky tactile sensation with a refined aftertaste of ripe apricot, of almond flowers and basil flowers. With no fear of being banal, with some freshly caught and grilled snapper. To drink at once or to age for many years, up to 15."
92/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2016 vintage)
"Dark bright yellow. Aromas and flavors of stone and pomaceous orchard fruit complicated by hints of grapefruit and lime. Less tropical than some past Cometa bottlings, this stands out for its freshness and lemony minerality enlivened by bright floral notes on the long zingy finish. A lovely wine, and so well balanced you’ll never guess it had 14% alcohol."
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2015 vintage)
"Awesome and bright with intensity, the 2015 Sicilia Menfi Cometa is the latest edition of a landmark white wine from Sicily. The Fiano grape reveals its natural complexity slowly with delicate renderings of stone fruit, saffron, lightly toasted pine nut and yellow rose. The effect is silky and svelte in terms of texture, but the finish is driven by a long sense of power and persistence. Winemaking is executed under extreme temperature control and the wine rests on fine lees in stainless steel in order to achieve its profound sense of depth and dimension. It should evolve slowly for the next decade."
