A classic, lush-styled Chardonnay but with lots of structure, character and complexity. Pegasus have older vines and, as the first well-known label to establish themselves there, have long experience in Waipara's ideal conditions for Chardonnay. It shows in this consistently expressive and impressive icon of a wine, which will drink beautifully now or cellar for quite some time.

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Strapping yet delicate, richly flavoured yet subtle, this sophisticated North Canterbury wine is one of the country's best Chardonnays grown south of Marlborough. Muscular and taut, it typically offers a seamless array of fresh, crisp, citrusy, biscuity, complex flavours and great concentration and length. Estate-grown at Waipara, it is based on ungrafted, Mendoza-clone vines (about 30 years old), hand-picked and given lengthy oak aging (the 2017 vintage was fermented and lees-aged for a year in French oak puncheons, 30 per cent new). The elegant 2017 vintage (5*) is bright, light yellow/green, with a highly fragrant, slightly smoky bouquet. A powerful, weighty wine, with concentrated, ripe grapefruit-like flavours, seasoned with well-integrated oak, it is still very youthful. Full of potential, it's well worth cellaring to 2021+." 95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Bold, complex and flavoursome Cchardonnay with struck match, mineral, grapefruit, bran biscuit and spicy oak flavours. A rich, weighty, textural wine that 'feels' as good as it tastes. Will develop well with bottle age.Drink 2019 to 2024"
