Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.
What The Critics Say
89-91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski
"Unlike the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc comes off vineyards on the Waimea Plains. Twenty percent is barrel fermented to try to get some more texture into the wine. Always a touch green, the 2017 is no exception, but then it balances those with currant and pink grapefruit notes. It's plump and medium-bodied, with a bit of creaminess on the mid-palate." Drink 2018 - 2019
94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)
"Aromatic and quite concentrated sauvignon blanc, with an intriguing mix of lemon zest, subtle tree fruit, nectarine and a suggestion of savoury, nutty character. Complex, linear and long. Very appealing wine. 28/10/2016" Drink 2016 - 2021
94/100 and Top NZ Sauvignon, Decanter Magazine UK (2014 vintage)
"One of New Zealand’s most reliable names. This (2014 ) has a beautifully textured and rounded palate of guava, lemongrass and peach brightened by subtle toasty oak, leesy complexity and zingy acidity. Far removed from a stereotypical Kiwi Sauv Blanc, and one that will age well."
