Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere.The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

"Bright straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is soft and elegant in expression unfolding layers of detail with white and yellow stonefruits, pears, hints of honeysuckle, nuances of exotic florals and subtle flinty, minerally and nutty notes. This has finesse and piquancy and grows in depth and concentration with aeration. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has a very refined, concentrated, but rounded core with flavours of white stonefruits along with an amalgam of pears, white florals and subtle, flinty, mineral and nutty detail. The fruit has vitality and is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity, and the wine flows with excellent energy along a soft-textured line, leading to a taut, lingering finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, refined, but intense off-dry Pinot Gris with vibrant, detailed flavours of stonefruits, pears, florals and minerals on a lively palate. Match with seafood and poultry over the next 4+ years.
