2017 Mt Difficulty Target Gully Pinot Noir
Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.
What The Critics Say
96/100 James Suckling.com Nick Stock
"A very exotic array of dried, eastern spices and wild herbs here. Very distinctive and plush, this has a wealth of fine and detailed tannin, wrapped around a core of plush and succulent, ripe red cherries. Impressive drive and focus. There’s a lot to like now and plenty to come. Drink or hold."
96/100 Bob Campbell
"Intense wine with layered flavours suggesting coffee, chocolate/mocha, plum, cassis, mixed spice and nutty oak flavours together with emerging savoury bottle-age characters. Elegant, complex wine from nearly 40 year-old vines. Drink 2023 to 2027"
