93+ Points
A yummy biodynamic Chardonnay from Gisborne. The name Crazy by Nature captures the ethos of organic/biodynamic legends Millton. This easy-going second label was grown in their own vineyards and in made much the same style as their estate wines, though it is even cheaper to buy. Lighter-bodied and fresh with nice citrus and tree fruit, the Shotberry is an harmonious and ethical white that, like many organic wines, drains from the glass with considerable ease.

Its Origins

The first biodynamic estate in New Zealand (and the first in the Southern Hemisphere to gain Demeter certification), James and Annie Millton have been growing wine in Manutuke on the banks of the Te Arai river in Gisborne since 1984. Farmed from inception in this manner, it was built on the backbone of family winegrowing in the area, with both James and Annie's parents having vines in what is now known as "Opou" and "Riverpoint". The shotberry Chardonnay comes from these vineyards, and shotberries themselves are the intense little seedless grapes for which the Mendoza selection of Chardonnay is renowned.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage

"The 2017 harvest produced wonderfully ripe grapes and full crunchy flavours. I make this wine in a fruit-forward style with the freshness of an ocean breeze and the texture of fine silt loam. The young juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts and no further additions in the form of finings. White peach, honeysuckle and ripe apricot flavours abound. This is a versatile food wine, particularly suitable with seafood, cheeses and summer salads." Drink 2017 - 2021

Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2011 vintage)

"Youthful and fragrant, the bouquet shows ripe citrus, white peach and oatmeal characters. It's juicy and vibrant on the palate with silky texture and bright acidity, finishing long and smooth. The wine shows lovely fruit expression, and is well complemented by delicate savoury complexity."

Raymond Chan (2011 vintage)

"Named after the intense little grapes of Mendoza clone Chardonnay. Certified organic and biodynamic fruit from the ‘Riverpoint' and ‘Opou' vineyards fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine given light oaking. Full, bright, straw-yellow with light golden hues. The nose full with bright and vibrant ripe, yellow stonefruit aromas, with notes of butterscotch MLF and subtle oak. Medium-bodied, there are concentrated, up-front flavours of stonefruits expressed with good richness and without complication, with some nuances of butter and nuts emerging in the glass. Good acidity enhances the fruit-driven nature and there is a soft creaminess to the texture, providing a lively, fresh mouthfeel. This is a fruit-forward Chardonnay with accessible textures and some detailed nuances. Serve with antipasto, pasta and white meat dishes over the next 2-3+ years. 17.0+/20 RRP $20.00."
