Mills Reef’s top Chardonnay is a rich but elegant style, with an impressive weight of ripe stonefruit and a generous and slightly oily palate. A great vintage has once again produced a drink-now ripeness, while bright acidity and of course barrel aging builds the Elspeth for early an balance -- or optional development in cellar.

Its Origins

Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. The winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.

What The Critics Say

4.5 Stars and Top Ten Chardonnay, Cuisine Magazine 2019

"Charming and well-defined with an exquisite youthful colour. The bouquet is engaging and accented with some with smoky notes and a toasty warmth. The structure is restrained yet the fruit is present which is the hallmark of excellence in winemaking."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Big, rich, generously-proportioned chardonnay with toast, brioche, struck flint, mineral and nutty oak around a core of peach, apricot and grapefruit. A complex wine that promises to become even more interesting with greater bottle age 10 MAY 2019."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2016 vintage)

"Toasty wood spices, vanilla, roasted peach, red apple and baked custard bouquet. Quite complex, youthful and enticing overall. Dry, full-bodied and creamy on the palate. Balanced and dry on the palate with an immediate wood spice and vanilla character enhanced by alcohol, acidity and creamy intensity. Flavours from the nose repeat on the palate with a quite a lengthy, toasty finish. drink now and through 2024."
