First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history. Rated as Waiheke’s finest vintage to date, the 2013 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional quality. Hand harvested and either gently foot stomped before pressing or whole bunch pressed directly to barrel for an un-inoculated ‘wild’ fermentation in 500 litre acacia or oak puncheons.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Graceful and multi-layered, this compelling rendition offers lifted aromas of ripe stone fruit, mango, fig and toasted hazelnut characters with subtle notes of flint and jasmine. It is wonderfully concentrated and expansive on the palate, displaying opulent fruit richness together with creamy texture and savoury complexity, firmly structured by bright acidity. $49.00. www.manowarvineyards.co.nz. May 2018." Drink 2019 - 2025

"Bright, even, straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is softly full and voluminous with generous and up-front aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits along with nuances of citrus and tropical fruit melded with well-packed complexing aromas of gunflint reduction, creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak. This has depth and power. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and mouthfilling flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits with hints of citrus and tropical fruit, integrated with a fine, complex amalgam of nutty oak and flinty reduction. There is a suggestion of richness and creaminess from the barrel-ferment, which is balanced by bright, refreshing acidity. The wine carries with power and drive along a fine-textured line, leading to a long and sustained finish. Match with poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5-6+ years. A selection of the finest barrels. Fruit from the volcanic hillsides WBP, and fruit from the sheltered hillsides foot-stomped, then fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented with full solids to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 36% new French oak puncheons, with no batonnage and no MLF. 19.0/20 May 2018 RRP $48.99." Drink 2018 - 2024

"Rich, flavoursome and complex wine with peach, nectarine, apricot, hazelnut and brioche flavours. A weighty, textural chardonnay that promises to age well but is very accessible now. Drink 2018 to 2024."
