This is another of those quiet legends: once people try it they always go back. Maybe because it is so distinctive - lush stone fruit and fresh acidity but with an oily-mineral character/texture (from where we've no idea) and perhaps a salty note thanks to one of New Zealand's strangest vineyards, on the tiny island of Ponui just off the coast of Waiheke. It has major X factor and is always interesting - compelling even - and the only solution we've found is to buy one and join the fan club.

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Powerful and sumptuous, this is reminiscent of a top-notch Alsace pinot gris. Gorgeous aromas of baked pear, mango, honey, warm spice and potpourri lead to a concentrated palate that is plush and delicious. It is wonderfully textured and magnificently fruited, brilliantly enhanced by elegant sweetness and juicy acidity, finishing persistent and creamy. Grapes were grown on their estate vineyards in Waiheke and Ponui Islands. Style: Medium. May 2018." Drink 2018 - 2022

17.5+/20 Raymond Chan

"Bright, light golden-hued straw-yellow colour, lighter on the rim. The nose is a little restrained in expression, but unfolds gentle voluminous aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits melded with a little honey and musk, building to form a moderately concentrated, rounded core, unveiling subtle nutty notes. Medium in sweetness and medium-bodied, the palate has a moderately rich and luscious heart with flavours of yellow stonefruits along with exotic florals, honey and musk. The mouthfeel exudes a degree of unctuousness and is balanced by fresh, lacy acidity. The flavours show good presence and carry softly to a gentle finish. This is a moderately luscious medium Pinot Gris with yellow stonefruit, floral and honied flavours with some unctuousness and richness. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 3+ years. Fruit from Ponui Island and Waiheke Island fermented with light solids in tank to 12.5% alc. and 21 g/L RS. 17.5+/20 May 2018 RRP $34.90." Drink 2018 - 2022
