An amazing chance to get hold of a unique wine! This top offering from Barossa legends Langmeil was largely sourced from ten very special rows of "orphan" vines, which were planted before 1860 and eventually saved from destruction to be replanted in one of Langmeil's best riverside spots. This wine will open beautifully now and for the next twenty plus years.

Its Origins

Once a trading village established in 1842, this remarkable place is a captivating pocket of Australia’s wine and vine history that is a must when visiting the Barossa. Owned by the Lindner family, whose own mark on the Barossa spans six-generations of farming, food, community and wine, Langmeil is renowned for its preservation of old vines and the making of distinguished wines from these cherished sites. At the pinnacle of its winemaking is The Freedom 1843 Shiraz, made from what is understood to be the world’s oldest surviving shiraz vineyard believed planted in 1843 at the heart of this historical patch of Barossa earth.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"Shiraz (with a 2% splash of cabernet sauvignon) with an average vine age of 77-plus years, matured in an even split of old and new French hogsheads. There is a distinct edge of smoked meats hovering over the deep satsuma plum and blackberry fruit aromas. Further hints of baking spices, aniseed, blueberry pastries, roasting meats and dark chocolate. A light wash of cedar increases in volume on the palate along with vanilla bean and kirsch, tight fine tannin tugging at the roof of the mouth and an impressive depth on the exit." Drink 2023 - 2033

93/100 The Real Review, Stuart Knox

"Dense, almost opaque core into a deep ruby rim. Blueberry preserve, rope liquorice and cola spices lift from the glass. A big palate of dark berry fruit that has ample oak spices added to it. Great length and the drive of fruit intensity is well focused by the sandy tannins. Right now the oak sits a little out but time will see that integrate 18 JAN 2023." Drink 2024 - 2038
