Approximately 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Cinsault and 10% Grenache
Located a few kilometers from the Mediterranean, along one of the renowned terroirs of Bandol, the “chemin de L’argile” (clay path), close to the famed Pibarnon estate. Jean-Marie Castel is the vineyard manager and vintner here, with ownership stemming down from the Ferec family for a few generations. The estate farms about 10 hectares, of which 6.5 is Mourvedre, with the rest Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette and Ugni Blanc. They also rent 2 hectares of vines, mostly to be used in the rosé. Vineyard management is almost organic, or “lutte raisonnée”, and the work is all manual (including hand harvesting - a stipulation all over the Bandol AOC). Very traditional.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Decanter Magazine, 50 Top Rosés of the World (2015 vintage)
"Pale, salmon pink with orangey flecks. Restrained aromas of apricot, spice and herbs that continue on the palate. Concentrated, chewy and weighty with mineral acidity. Mouthwatering and fresh, if a little understated. Complexity will come." Drink 2016 - 2018
16.5/20 Jancis Robinson (2012 Vintage)
"Scented and satin smooth. Very well done and a food wine with herby and marine scents. A bit lighter than the most famous Bandol rosé and a tad more like Esclans - but much cheaper! Mouth filling...75% Mourvèdre with 15% Cinsault and 10% Grenache. Made in a tiny cellar in a small town called La Cadière d’Azur on the Côte d’Azur. The vineyards sit in a natural amphitheatre creating a micro-climate for the production of very healthy grapes. The vineyards are treated as organically as possible, although not certified. Made entirely from press juice, with all of the varieties being vinified separately and the final assemblage made in the Autumn just before bottling. Winemaker Leonardo Bellacaccini."
18/20 Raymond Chan (2011 vintage)
"This highly regarded domaine has one of the best sites in Cadiere d'Azure. 70% Mourvedre, 20% Cinsault and 10% Grenache, fermented to 13.5% alc. Bright, very pale peachy-pink colour, ‘eye of the partridge', pale on edge. The bouquet is delicately soft with good depth of stonefruit aromas and the faintest red florals and red berry fruits, along with herbs and flint. Dry to taste, subtle rich flavours of red florals and peaches are encompassed by weight and vinosity, the fruit showing a degree of lusciousness, well-matched by alcohol drive. The acidity is discreet, and the rounded mouthfeel carries through to a dry, crisp and sustained finish with light fruit notes. This is a classical dry Bandol rosé with subtle richness and excellent weight. Serve with antipasto and charcuterie over the next 3+ years."
