A full-blown, top-end Grenache from hot Barossa. Huge body and depth wraps the palate in classic ripe, red Grenache flavours while sheer depth, acid balance and silky tannin structure are Chateauneuf-like red - i.e. luscious on release but destined to age almost indefinitely. These ancient vines planted in 1935 are not only biodynamic but grown without irrigation, possible thanks to deep roots growing through the sand into the clay underneath. One of the best premium Grenache wines out of Aussie, this is seriously underpiced!

Its Origins

In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region's leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.

What The Critics Say

95/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2016 vintage)

"Barossa Grenache from a vineyard planted in 1935. This is where Kalleske shines. Straight to the pool room. Vivid flavours, good depth, plenty of savoury spice, and a big kick of flavour to close. Substance, style and fanfare. Swerves of tannin. The flavours are in the redcurrant/red cherry/anise/ spearmint mould but there’s earth, cloves, rust and assorted other goodies contained herein. It’s silky too, though there’s fibre to the nodes of tannin. Ripper Grenache."

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwoinski (2016 vintage)

"Bush vines planted in ?35 offering grenache aromatics at their best - a heady mix of earth, florals, musk, raspberry jubes and pomegranate that follow through onto the full-bodied palate. Slippery texture with grainy, powerful tannins and holds its alcohol well, just."
