Durif / Petite Sirah
In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region's leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.
What The Critics Say
4.5 Stars Tony Love, The Advertiser, August 2017 (2016 vintage)
"The first thing that grabs your attention here is the outrageous colour of this wine- intensely vibrant purples - and its impenetrable density. This certified organic, Greenock sub-district, 15 per cent alcohol monster follows through with super-rich aromas that suggest crumbled dark soils and old fashioned boot polish - all rich, chewy, farmhouse rusticity with plum pudding flavours and dry tannins, yet the fruit is so powerful it pushes right through. This will rock anyone who loves full bodied red.”
93+/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2014 vintage)
"Loved the 2012 and 2013 Kalleske Buckboard Durif releases. Keen to tuck into the 2014. It keeps the run going. It’s thick, tannic, pumped up with fruit and yet generally – if heroically – well shaped. Licorice, dark chocolate, blackberries and leather. Fresh. Intense. Very tannic. And very good."
93/100 James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (2014 vintage)
"Standard Kalleske red wine vinification, matured in American hogsheads (25% new) for 14 months. So thick and dense, so rich in chocolate and fruitcake it is almost beyond wine ? although far from unpleasant."
