In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region's leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Andrew Smith, The Wine Smith, August 2017 (2016 vintage)
"Did somebody say Zinfandel?! If you’ve never tried one, this is a great place to start. Straight up you notice the luscious dark red colour with an impenetrable core. The aroma is full on! It has all the depth and intensity of a full bodied Cabernet. Thinking musically, the aroma has a base note of dark fruits, mid note of spearmint and a top note like musk. In the mouth it’s a mid to full bodied red. Layers of dark and red fruits from strawberry at the top, to blueberry, quince, guava right down to dark satsuma plums can be found. There’s sweet licorice, caramel, sarsaparilla, pepper and star anise in here too. The latter two sparkle right down the length of the finish. They are kept on their dancing toes by a dusting of tannins helped minimally by the oak. Although the 2016 Fordson by Kalleske is full of fruit, it remains sleek and youthful. It will benefit from being in the cellar short term and probably be at it’s peak in about 5 years."
Winemaker notes on previous 2016 vintage
"Fordson Zinfandel is rich purple-red in colour. Ascending from the glass are intense and lifted aromas of blackberry jam, jubes, clove spice, Christmas cake and a touch of choc-mint. The juicy palate is packed with succulent berry fruits, suitably restrained with fine but structured tannins. There are subtle oak maturation nuances adding further complexity. Energetic, harmonious and truly varietal, this medium to full bodied wine is very drinkable. Approachable and fruit forward, Fordson Zinfandel can be enjoyed now or over the next five years."
