The bearer of a remarkable story, Alex Kaufman was a Polish holocaust survivor who arrived in America with ‘nothing but a quarter in his shoe’ and rose from laboratory cleaner to Pharmaceutical boss. Having fallen in love with the beautiful climes of Central Otago, the elderly but energetic Kaufman established Kalex wines, the stewardship of which is now taken by his daughter Irene Kaufman. With genuine backing to focus on quality fruit and winemaking - with Theo Coles at the winemaking helm - Kalex wines pander not at all to the market but instead make superbly classy and distinctive wines, reflective of classic European taste but capturing in a very refined form that clean, bright fruit and herbal aspect engendered by Central Otago’s harsh alpine conditions.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Splendidly fruited and beautifully fragrant, the bouquet shows dark cherry, Black Doris plum,
anise, olive and roasted nut characters. The palate delivers excellent weight and fruit intensity
together with silky texture and polished tannins, finishing long and soothing. Wonderfully styled
and multi-layered with seductive complexity. Jan 2020." Drink 2020 - 2022
