A serioius single-vineyard wine from Head, a serious boutique player in the Barossa. This label sits on a similar quality level as Head's two top single vineyard labels. But the slightly cheaper Contrarian label has usually been out-sourced to whatever Barossa vineyard the winemaker feels is performing the best in a given year. Delicious stuff to drink now or cellar, the Contrarian is a new import that's well worth checking out.

Its Origins

Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

92/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh

"Three granite based vineyards in the Eden Valley. 40% whole bunch. Cement ferment. Raised in a four year old foudre. Blackberry, liquorice, spice, some mint and flowers. Medium-bodied, meaty, bloody, plenty of scrub herb, blackcurrant, firm mineral/ironstone tannin – like the tannin here – dry and firm finish. An interesting and very savoury expression of Barossa Shiraz." Drink 2020 - 2027+

91/100 Huon Hooke

"Deep, bright red/purple colour, with a very attractive complex bouquet of smoky, earthy, savoury-plum and a hint of graphite. The wine is medium to full-bodied and has softness and elegance. There's most appealing flavour and lightness of touch, even if it seems to finish a little short. The 50% whole-bunch barely shows. 24 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2029

90/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Campbell Mattinson

"100% shiraz from 20-35yo vines. 25% whole bunches. 250 dozen. Game, leather and plum flavours lend this wine plenty of character and just a little curiosity. It's both a dry and drying style with earth, clove and campfire notes making up a complex picture." Drink by 2025
