Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
94/100 Huon Hooke
"Deep red/purple hue and a complex, foresty, earthy, sousbois aspect to the nose. A surprising hint of white pepper - but it was a cool year. The wine is full-bodied but not massive, with fine, mild tannins and a degree of elegance. Lovely balance. Oak doesn't show. (Stonewell fruit. 10% whole-bunch, 20% new oak. Barrique aged) 24 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2032
95/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner (2016 vintage)
"There's a definite Stone Well density and intensity going on in this richly flavoured and compelling wine. Awash with sour cherry, plump sweet black plums and seasoned with pepper, mocha and earth; ribbons of plush tannins wrap around the fuller bodied yet silky palate, then a flourish of fresh acidity on the finish."
