Another 95+ point score! That is basically Bob Campbell's average score for Grasshopper Rock, over 12 years of vintages — and that kind of record is usually reserved for wines of $60 or so. This outstanding quality is less about their boutique sense of focus (because they only make this wine) or their expert wine-making (by ex-Peregrine winemaker Pete Bartle). It is more about their beautifully managed Earnscleugh vineyard, from which all the best fruit goes into this super value label. Loaded with gongs and accolades, what matters is that it's delicious!

Overview

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Grasshopper Rock is one of the world’s southern most vineyards, established in 2003 and dedicated exclusively to pinot noir. The vineyard is situated on Earnscleugh Road, across the Clutha River from Alexandra. The site enjoys high sunshine hours by day and very cool temperatures by night and is sufficiently harsh and difficult to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of spring and autumn frosts, providing a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of premium pinot noir.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"A complex and intriguing bouquet of Pinot Noir with suggestions of ripe red berry fruits, layers of wood spice and dried herbs, a dark rose and lavender combination, a deep seated earthy quality and most importantly Pinosity and charm. Delicious on the palate with textures and fruit flavours forming synergies and power balancing the youthful grip of chalky tannins and acidity. Long finish, a lovely wine. Decant for service with best drinking from today and through 2025."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Fragrant pinot noir with attractive floral notes together with fleshy plum, dark cherry, wet stone and mineral characters. More weight and fruit intensity than usual perhaps thanks to vintage conditions and vine age. Impressive purity and length. Should age well 19 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2026

92/100 Decanter, Rebecca Gibb

"This has great colour and is beautifully fragrant. It's fresh, elegant yet ripe, with gorgeous violet, blackberry and raspberry coulis flavours. Lovely skin and seed tannins coat the palate like cocoa powder, and there's no edginess evident." Drink 2019 - 2030
