Cornish Point is a very special slither of land surrounded by water - the Clutha and Kawarau rivers each side, and the lake nearby. With this moderating influence and air flow over deep fine soils, the grapes ripen slowly to produce a dark-fruited but distinctly elegant and floral expression. Exceptional stuff, the Cornish Point is a contender for Central Otago 'Grand Cru' status. Collect!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality.
Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on 2017 vintage

"Ripe plum and an earthy savouriness are complimented with mocha and rose petal. The immediately inviting and generous mouthfeel is in the usual extroverted Cornish Point manner. However, every component is in superb balance with not a step out of place: a sign of things to come as vine age starts to dominate in this vineyard. Chocolate nut tannins flow across the palate building presence and scale. Like a favourite soft and comfortable sofa: easy to melt in to!"

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

"From the company-owned Cornish Point Vineyard at the eastern end of Bannockburn, 6 kilometres from the winery, this is always one of my favourite Felton Road reds. From a warm, early-ripening season, the 2016 vintage (5*) was matured for 13 months in French oak barriques (25 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtering. Bright ruby, it is highly perfumed. Full of personality, it is very savoury and supple, with ripe plum, spice, dried herb and nut flavours, gentle tannins and lovely complexity and harmony. Delicious young, it's a drink-now or cellaring proposition."

97/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)

"Subtle, silken and very complex pinot noir with an array of dark cherry, plum, floral and Oriental spice flavours. A core of sweet fruit perfectly balances fine, drying tannins to give the wine a linear, lingering quality. Power delivered with subtlety. Very impressive."
