Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.
What The Critics Say
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"This outstanding wine is grown in a 'special part of The Elms Vineyard in front of the winery', which has the oldest vines. The 2017 vintage (5*) was matured for 17 months in seasoned French oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright, light lemon/green, with a fragrant, slightly biscuity bouquet, it is weighty and savoury, with concentrated, citrusy, slightly appley flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, and a powerful, very harmonious finish. Best drinking 2021+. (In a vertical tasting of the 2012 to 2014 vintages, held in July 2018, the wine underlined its ability to mature superbly. The 2012 is highly fragrant, vigorous and intense, with just a hint of bottle-aged toastiness; the citrusy, minerally, deeply flavoured 2013 is still unfolding; the rich, biscuity and complex 2014 is starting to round out and offers delicious drinking from now onwards.)" 93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2016 vintage)
"After 17 months in previously used oak, the 2016 Block 2 Chardonnay is remarkably pure and fresh. Delicate notes of crushed stone, citrus blossom and bergamot push forward, borne on a texture of the finest silk or culinary sauce. The result is almost savory despite a preponderance of fruit, with a briny edge to the lengthy finish."
17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding (2015 vintage)
"Complex mealy aroma entwined with a fresh note of orange pith and citrus fruit. Great freshness and clean lines with structure more from the acid than the oak. Bright and intense with no excess weight and a long spicy finish. Shows well even at room temperature. Very good. (JH)."
