Perhaps NZ's top estate Pinot, Felton's Bannockburn is over-invested. 'Biodynamic', 'zero waste', 'gravity fed' - such terms don't begin to express the spirit and wine genius here, the expression of place in liquid form that many talk about but few really achieve. Packed with hugely dense and concentrated flavours of not just berries but spices, florals, mineral and savoury elements, this is a Central Pinot with gravitas, capturing the local richness and definition but also an ethereal layering and harmony that is so much more than just gorgeous fruit. In demand so don't dally.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on 2016 vintage

"The immediate potpourri of flowers on the nose is gracefully entwined with subtle minerality. The palate begins precise and playful, showing sandalwood and fine spice notes. A surprising breadth that the tight focus doesn't immediately reveal. Balanced and complete: possessing lovely charm, harmony and a persistent finale. Irresistible in its youth but further complexities will no doubt emerge."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Felton Road's entry level pinot noir is an elegant blend of several vineyards with a mix of savoury, earthy, herbal and coffee flavours with cherry, floral and spice characters. It's a supple and complex wine that reveals power through a lengthy finish."

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2016 vintage)

"Unusually delicate red fruit notes mark the nose of the 2016 Pinot Noir. It's a mélange of strawberry, raspberry and cherry, with some herbal notes, cola and spice blended in. In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied and supple, with a long, silky finish."
