A steal for such an elegant and weighty Riesling from Larry McKenna. Newly labelled under the Artisan series, the "Ryan" is their classic dry Riesling, but is very textural thanks to fermentation on skins and yeast work in old oak barrels. From the alluvial gravel of the Martinborough Terrace, this powerful Riesling is better than its full original price.

Its Origins

The four owners of Escarpment - Larry and Sue McKenna, Robert and Mem Kirby - met by chance through a mutual friend in 1998. But their shared sense that New Zealand had great things to offer the world of Pinot Noir saw them going into business the very same year. Using winemaker Larry McKenna's local knowledge they settled on Martinborough’s alluvial Te Muna terrace - then hardly on the map but now an important and renowned sub-region. A winery name was eventually chosen that was sufficiently sublime yet descriptive of the vineyard’s own distinctive landscape, but the name no doubt also makes reference to the famous limestone escarpment that forms the spine of France’s Burgundy region - from which McKenna draws his key traditions and inspirations. McKenna began his studies in his native Australia before his OE brought him to New Zealand, where his main position was CEO and Winemaker of Martinborough Vineyards over a period of extraordinary growth between 1986 and 1999. Since establishing Escarpment McKenna has consistently made superb terroir wines in many varietals, while further consolidating his particular reputation as New Zealand’s foremost expert in serious, savoury, premium Pinot Noir.

What The Critics Say

18/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is elegant with very fine and intense aromas of lime fruit entwined with fragrant herbs and white florals, and a subtle array of botanicals. This is refined and penetrating. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has intense, deep and tightly bound flavours lime fruit infused with herbs and botanical suggestions, along with lifted white florals. The mouthfeel is bright and refreshing with brisk acidity, and the flavours are carried by a very fine phenolic line. The palate is balanced and has vibrancy, and the flavours carry to an elegant’ lingering finish of limes, florals and herbs. This is an intense and penetrating dry Riesling with bright and lively lime fruit along with herbs and florals on a brisk palate. Reminiscent of a ‘gin and tonic’! Serve as an aperitif and with seafood over the next 4 years. Fruit from the company’s Te Muna Road site, fermented with skin contact and in barrel to 11.3% alc. and <1 g/L RS, TA 7.0 g/L and pH 3.25. the wine given lees contact. 18.0/20 Mar 2018 RRP $24.00."
