The superb and silky top Chardonnay from Hawkes Bay icons, Elephant Hill. The Salome is sourced mostly from their original Te Awanga site, where only the best fruit is used to produce a top cuvee full of gently lush white fruits with a feminine, gently floral and mineral feel. Palpable fruit weight and quality makes this very satisfying now, while harmony and elegance mean any palate will find it simply delicious -- for a few years to come. Yummy!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Immediately complex with a Meursault-like bouquet of cashew spice, cold smoke, grapefruit peel, apple and peach. A complex and lengthy wine on the palate with flavours that mirror the nose. Satin texture with a light creamy butter note and a bite of new oak. Primed for cellaring with drinking from 2021/22 and through to 2030. An excellent wine." Drink 2020 - 2030

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Seductive and sensuous, this splendidly composed chardonnay shows golden peach, rockmelon, lemon peel and brioche characters with nuances of vanilla and cedar. The palate is superbly weighted and expansive, delivering delectable fruit flavours together with stylish oak infusion, finishing persistent and creamy. It is opulent yet elegant with layers of fine texture. At its best: now to 2025." Drink 2019 - 2025

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Only the second vintage of Elephant Hill's flagship chardonnay with just 111 cases produced. Most of the grapes from Te Awanga with some from a low-cropped section of their Bridge Pa vineyard. Concentrated yet restrained chardonnay that is rather taut at this early stage with chalky, mineral, citrus, brioche and bran biscuit flavours. To be launched on 1 May. Should develop well with bottle age 16/4/2019." Drink 2019 - 2025
