A great discount on this future classic, the Phant red blend is delicious again in the nice vintage of 2016. Medium-bodied with focussed dark-red fruit, it is nicely ripe and finely structured with a toasty oak profile like a very good Bordeaux. One of the best dinner reds we could imagine for that price. Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

""This is beautifully fruited and delightfully perfumed on the nose showing blackcurrant, spiced plum, vanilla and toasted nut characters with a hint of tobacco. It's succulent and wonderfully weighted on the palate offering terrific fruit intensity backed by fine texture and grainy tannins." Drink 2020 - 2027

18/20 Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, Candice Chow

"Deep, dark black-red colour, lighter on the rim. The nose is soft with good intensity aromas of berry fruit, cassis, plums, melded with herbaceous notes and integrated fragrant oak element. The palate is pleasantly soft and juicy berries, plums and cassis, entwined with herbs and toasty oak spices. Medium-bodied, the mouthfeel is smooth with ripe fine-grained tannin structure, providing a soft grip. The balanced acidity flows with good energy and freshness, to a rounded, linear, dry finish. This a soft and succulent Merlot dominant blend, exhibiting juicy red fruit and herbs, with an integrated fine-grained tannin structure supported by toasty oak detail. Match with red meat over the next 3-5 years. A blend of 72% Merlot, 27% Syrah, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.4% alc. Aged 12 months in French oak, 25% new oak. 18/20 pts June 2020 RRP $26." Drink 2020 - 2025

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)

"The 2015 vintage (4*) is a deeply coloured, Merlot-based red (70 per cent), with minor portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Hand-picked in the Gimblett Gravels, at Te Awanga and in the Bridge Pa Triangle, it was oak-aged for a year. Fragrant and fresh, with generous, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, tinged with sweet oak, it has a solid foundation of tannin, and nutty, savoury notes adding complexity. Enjoyable young, it's also well worth cellaring."
