2017 Elephant Hill Hawkes Bay Airavata Syrah

Grape
Syrah
Its Origins
Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Andrew Caillard MW
"Medium deep crimson. Fresh graphite, dark cherry aromas with ginger pepper notes. Supple and inky smooth in texture with lovely dark cherry, mulberry, elderberry fruits, fine chalky firm graphite textures and long fresh mineral acidity."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Complex, detailed bouquet with an attractive allure of new French oak, ripe red berries and dark plums, fragrant spices and pepper. On the palate - weighty, fruity and complex with fine fruit tannins layered between more textured oak tannins and sweetness of new oak wood. A light smoky quality shows off the natural pepper flavour and acidity. A delicious yet very youthful wine, complex and fine. Decanting is a must for service between now and its ideal drinking window - 2021 through 2029. Best in your cellar till then. You will be rewarded with this investment." Drink 2021 - 2029
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Offering both power and grace, this meticulously composed and expressed syrah shows dark and purple fruit characters with spicy oak and fragrant spice notes on the nose. The palate displays impressive concentration and depth, beautifully enhanced by richly layered mouthfeel and velvety tannins. Immensely sophisticated and engaging. At its best: 2024 to 2037. $120.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. June 2020." Drink 2024 - 2037
