Grape
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Its Origins
Element is a new and very stylish boutique range that is grown on the Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay. "Element Wines is the label of Dominic and Rachelle Smith who own a 4.2 ha site on Mere Road in the Gimblett Gravels with 2.66 ha of vines. They have Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Viognier, the first vines planted in 2004. Their intention is to make wines that showcase varietal purity. The Smiths are hands-on with all aspects of the viticulture and winemaking, and employ open top fermenters and basket presses at a local winemaking facility. The wines from the 2015 vintage [were] their first commercial releases." Raymond Chan
What The Critics Say
90/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Fruit for this wine is sourced from the Gimblett Gravels - aromas and flavours suggest tobacco and dark berries, dry stones and roasted bell-pepper. Toasty barrel spices of clove and vanilla along with a a rocky, gravel-like earthy quality. Very youthful on the palate with the structure dominating - tannins, acidity and power. The fruits described do emerge on the second and third taste. A wine with some development time needed to show off its true potential, final flavours and textures. Decant for service and enjoy with high protein food." Drink 2022 - 2026
91/100 Andrew Caillard MW
"Medium deep crimson. Graphite, dark chocolate, dark berry aromas with sandalwood notes. Redcurrant, mulberry inky flavours, with fine chalky textures, mid plate richness and underlying sandalwood, roasted walnut notes. Finishes firm and tight with marked acidity."
90/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Beautifully fruited and elegantly lifted, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, spiced plum, game and toasted almond characters with subtle dried herb complexity. The palate is succulent and smooth, delivering lovely youthful fruit intensity backed by fine texture and polished tannins. Harmonious and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2021. $25.00. www.elementwines.co.nz. June 2018."
