Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
Bob Campbell MW
"Entry level chardonnay that delivers better than entry level quality. It's elegant, subtle, delicately creamy with white peach, citrus and subtle nutty lees flavours. 21/1/2019." Drink 2019 - 2022
"Offering good value, the 2017 vintage was hand-harvested in the Wairau Valley and made with use of barrel fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green, it is still youthful, with citrusy, slightly biscuity flavours, showing considerable complexity and very good depth."
93/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
“Lovely bouquet of Chardonnay fruit with white fleshed orchard fruits, grapefruit and lemon, crisp red apple and loads of vanilla and creamy oak aromas. On the palate - youthful, firm, fruity, crisp and dry. Plenty of oak spice leads to fruit of the orchard flavours with baked peach and apple; quite spicy overall, balanced and well made with decent length." Drink 2017 - 2026
