A serious, essentially dry Riesling from one of the Mosel Valley's best vineyards. It is a generous style rated GG (Grand Cru), and while not overly sweet the sheer ripeness comes through in yellow stonefruit flavours as well as those citrus and marmalade notes, against a core of mineral (but not aggressive) acidity. Cellar or drink tonight. A truly beautiful wine and literally designated a great expression of this wonderful vineyard – a steal at this price.

Its Origins

Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced LOH-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation. At harvest, he insisted on fully mature fruit that had been very strictly selected. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling. Following these strict practices across a growing range of premium sites, Ernst Loosen has become one of Germany's leading producers and one of the world's acknowledged masters in the Riesling grape.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2017 vintage)

"From the famous Laychen parcel, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Alte Reben is bright, clear, fine and relaxed on the subtly concentrated nose that displays aromas of perfectly ripe stone fruit intertwined with delicate slate notes. On the palate, this is a concentrated, lush, vital, crystalline, highly refined and complex Sonnenuhr with finely racy acidity, lots of energy, grip and mineral tension. This is a rich, concentrated, powerful but still refined, vital and elegant Sonnenuhr that will improve over the years in the bottle. Tasted in March and April 2019. I tasted the wine from the same bottle 11 days later, and it had improved a lot."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Michael Schmidt (2017 vintage)

"This seems to show a touch of oak on the nose, perhaps it is just spice? But it's a creamy spice that I associate with big oak. Even more noticeable on the palate, cedar and spice with ripe lemon and pear fruit. Impressive length. (JH)."
