A superb sweetish Riesling from the red volcanic soil of the steep Wurzgarten vineyard. Known for spicy and exotic Rieslings loaded with tropical fruit flavours, this Spatlese bottling offers a step up in richness, sweetness and body from the Kabinett version of the same vineyard. Luscious fruit is beautifully balanced by minerally acidity -- zesty, zingy and lip-smackingly good!

Its Origins

Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced LOH-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation. At harvest, he insisted on fully mature fruit that had been very strictly selected. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese (AP 53 17) is clear, fresh and intense on the nose. This is a rich and lush, super juicy but also piquant and crystalline Spätlese with mineral grip and tension. The finish is extremely mouthwatering and salty. Beautiful."

92-93/100 Vinous, David Schildknecht (2016 vintage)

"Mint-laced fresh strawberry and lime on the nose morph into a delectable strawberry and lime chiffon on the palate, thanks to a combination of delicacy, subtle creaminess and refreshing primary juiciness. A hint of nutmeg enhances the rich sense of advanced ripeness on exhibit here alongside animation and brightness. Marine mineral suffusion serves for saliva-inducement on a lusciously persistent finish. The next sip is simply irresistible. (This was bottled ahead of the 2017 harvest but not until after my late July 2017 visit.)."
