Another truly outstanding vintage for this famous Chateauneuf from the Sabon family. This treasured old vine cuvee offers an impeccably elegant and complete expression from sources in four classic soil types -- pebbly, sandy, sandy limestone and red clay. Among our finest of all our imports, this Vielles Vignes from a superb vintage is a must-have for the decanter and cellar.

Its Origins

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roulés soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience." Drink 2022 - 2035

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming

"Tasted blind. Deep purple colour, black fruit and oak spice in equal measure on the nose. Sweet fruit on the palate, and gentle chew to finish with a bit of dark chocolate flavour adding complexity on the length. (RH)." Drink 2020 - 2030

99/100 The Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve (

"Deeply colored, this is incredibly concentrated. The wine is fleshy, silky and palate staining. The fruit coats your palate, but it's never heavy, or overblown. Instead, everything is in balance. The richly textured wine has polish, length and purity, along with a sexy style and a finish that you cannot stop tasting, staying with you for over 50 seconds! The wine is a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5%Mourvedre."
