Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.

"The nose is very fresh with intense, penetrating aromas of gooseberries, greengages and green stonefruits, entwined with dark herbs, unfolding white and yellow floral notes and subtle, complexing mineral elements. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate possesses sweet and luscious flavours of gooseberries, nectarines and green stonefruits with fresh herbs and suggestions of thirst-quenching minerals. The mouthfeel is brisk with crisp acidity, and the palate flows along a soft and very fine-textured line with excellent underlying energy and vitality. The wine carries to an elegant, lingering finish of stonefruits, gooseberries and herbs. Match with seafood and Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years. Hand-picked fruit from estate vineyards, WBP and partially indigenous yeast fermented to 12.5% alc. and 3.8 g/L RS, the wine aged 2-3 months in tank. "This wine offers a clear style contrast to Section 94, Dog Point's complex, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc (see the Branded and Other White Wines section). Hand-harvested at several sites in the Wairau Valley, it is lees-aged in tanks but handled without oak. The 2017 vintage (4*) is ripely scented, with slightly 'funky' aromas. Light lemon/green, it is a medium-bodied, vigorous wine, vibrantly fruity and tightly structured, with strong, crisp melon/lime flavours, a hint of passionfruit, a distinct touch of complexity and a dry, tangy finish.
