Its Origins

The Cune label now occupies the mid-range of the Cvne hierarchy, but the name is based in the family's orginal hometown of Haro, Rioja Alta. It was there that Cvne were established in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo, and over the decades they became and remained one of Rioja's most reliable sources of high quality wine. Soon comprising three bodegas (Asua de Real, Cune and Contino) they maintained the distinctiveness of each, with the Cune label's stylistic integrity built around a balance of old and new style Rioja: clean, juicy fruit with oak influence and ageworthy acid and tannin structure.

What The Critics Say

89/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez

"The red 2017 Cune Crianza is a wine they have always produced (though it used to be sold as Tercer Año [third year], as it was sold the third year after the harvest). It has the classical blend of Tempranillo with around 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo from the Rioja Alta zone and was fermented in 20,000-liter stainless steel tanks at 25–27 degrees Celsius to keep the fruit character in the wine. It matured in used American oak barrels for one year. They produce three million bottles of this throughout the year. It's classical but has some juicy sapidity, clean with very fine tannins and defined flavors. A triumph over the conditions of the vintage. Production was lower than the previous vintage because of the frost, but that also meant all grapes for this wine were handpicked, as nobody harvested with machines." Drink 2020 - 2023

16/20 Jancis Robinson MW (2016 vintage)

"Screwcapped. Mainly Rioja Alta Tempranillo from an unusually late harvest, fermented in tank and then aged for a year in American and some French oak. Proper young Tempranillo nose and a palate full of drive. Not heavy. Transparent. Fresh and zesty. Great balance and, for a wine with a few years' age on it, VGV."
