Its Origins

Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current vintage

"Pale lemon straw. Classic Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay aromatics of white blossom, nectarine, and a subtle lift from the finest French oak. Beautifully refined on the palate with intriguing tension between sweet fruit and textural phenolics as it finishes long and dry." -- "Wonderful concentration of rich stone fruits with citrus like acidity and good phenolic tension to carry the wine long towards the dry finish." Matt Stafford, Chief Winemaker

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)

"This is instantly likable. Gorgeous aromas of ripe stone fruit, fig, rockmelon and vanilla lead to a concentrated yet expansive palate that is beautifully weighted and richly textured. The wine shows plenty of delicious flavours, brilliantly structured by bright acidity, leading to a complex, sustained finish. At its best: now to 2020.”

18.5/20 Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)

"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, pale on rim. The nose is softly full and harmoniously concentrated with aromas of white stonefruits entwined with subtle layers of mealy and nutty oak, and flinty minerals, along with suggestions of lemon-curd MLF elements. Medium-bodied, the palate features soft, concentrated flavours of white stonefruits with creamy and nutty barrel-ferment notes balanced by fine phenolic textures and integrated, piquant acidity providing a driven line. The wine unfolds gunflint, smoke and lemon-curd MLF detail which is carried to a long, lingering, finely concentrated finish. This is an elegant, softly concentrated and finely textured Chardonnay with white stonefruit flavours and layers of nutty and flinty interest. Serve with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. Hand-picked fruit, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.4% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 28% new French oak barriques with 100% MLF. 18.5/20 Mar 2016 RRP $31.95."
