Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. Richard and Linda Avery's site is located in the famous stony soils of the old Omaka River bed, in the heart of Marlborough's Wairau Valley.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage
"Pale straw with green hue. A precise aromatic expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Ripe lime and green apple notes meld with fresh herbs and a hint of flowing spring water. The wine shows lovely balance across the palate with attractive fruit purity which is carried long towards the chalky, textural finish."
92/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage of former Avery vineyard label)
"From a stony vineyard in the Wairau Valley, this delicately expressed sauvignon displays lemon peel, feijoa, floral and red capsicum characters on the nose, followed by a finely textured palate that shows pristine fruit flavours and bright acidity. Beautifully balanced and flowing, this is a lovely food-friendly style. At its best: now to 2019. $21.00. www.craggyrange.com. Dec 2015."
